Dr. Fong is known clinically for his work in liver surgery––especially for helping prove liver resection to be potentially curative for stage IV colorectal liver metastases. For his clinical accomplishments, he was awarded the Layton F. Rikkers Master Clinician Award from the SSAT.
Dr. Fong’s laboratory focus is in the field of gene therapy, engineering viruses and immune cells for the killing of cancer. His surgical translational work has included design of surgical tools including imaging technologies, ablative technologies and surgical robots. His work in engineering has led to election to the American Institute of Medical and Biologic Engineering.
He has been awarded the Stanley Dudrick Award from the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, the Shipley Award from the Southern Surgical Association, and the Flance-Karl Award from the American Surgical Association. He has also been elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation, and to the National Academy of Medicine.
He has co-authored over 1000 articles and 24 textbooks, which have been cited over 99,000 times.
