Sylvain Gioux received an MS in Electronics and Signal Processing from ENSEEHIT, France, an MS in photonics from Boston University, a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University, and earned an executive MBA from IMD, Switzerland. Following his graduate studies, he was an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and a full Professor in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Strasbourg.
His academic research focused on the development of real-time optical imaging methods for surgical guidance that have the potential to impact patient care. Sylvain Gioux is an expert in near-infrared fluorescence imaging, quantitative optical imaging, and their application to image-guided interventions. He has been involved in developing both techniques at a fundamental level and translated them from the bench to the bedside during clinical trials in the USA and Europe.
Currently he is the Director of Imaging Research at Intuitive Surgical in the research and development department located in the EU headquarter (Aubonne, Switzerland). Specifically, the R&D department in Aubonne is focused on the design & translation of novel imaging & vision solutions and the evaluation of their potential in future products. He is also responsible for managing technical research collaborations in Europe with a focus on optics & imaging and interfacing with the European innovation ecosystem.
